We were there mainly to hear Chynna (pronounced "China") and Vaughan. Chynna Phillips, whose parents were part of the Mamas and the Papas many moons ago, formerly sang with the girl group Wilson Phillips, which had a good run for a while. Vaughan Penn has been known mainly as a very successful songwriter, but long before that, she participated in the Baptist Student Union at Appalachian State University, where she and Jan knew each other through involvement in singing and drama groups. Jan had not seen her since, and looked forward to having a chance to chat.Chynna and Vaughan started the show, but only got to do four songs before turning the stage over to Bluetree, an Irish group who found some East Bladen band uniforms backstage and came out looking like Sergeant Pepper's Lonely Heart's Club Band. They were very loud and I couldn't understand the words. Only one band member sang, and it took me a while to realize that "High Grit Is Our God" was really "How Great Is Our God" with an Irish accent.
We didn't stay for Newsong, the headliner. I suspect they would have been very loud, too. I did, however, like one of the T-shirts Newsong was selling in the lobby. It said "Hope is my oxygen."
I've known days when hope was the main thing that kept me going, and I suspect you have, too.
Breathe deeply!

It's good to see that one of the Phillips girls seems to be on a positive road. One bares her body. The other bares her soul about her sexual relationship with her father and lives in a drug fog. Tragically they are typical, I suppose, of so many of the children of entertainers.
Ahhh! You were in my hometown! Melvin's...what a great place!
I'm not sure what to say other than a friend of mine went to a Memorial Service on Saturday and Taylor Hick's Mother was there.
The deceased was great friend of Taylor's grandfather and with me starred in a 92 documentary later shown statewide that was editted in LA by Bob Dylan's son Sam, among others.
So Bob Dylan's son has studied my countenance.
The Documentarian went on to do the Oscar nominated On the Ropes and the Sundance acclaimed The Chicago Ten.
I think Cormac McCarthy coulda put the Mommas and the Poppas in approximate Biblical context if not proportions long about page 155 of The Crossing, for the Ga. Mtn Man in particular to consider.
I liked their music.
With all you, I continue to Hope for with Hebrews 13:11 in so doing we are already in the Promised Land.
Dr. Cartledge,
Just for consideration: you might give a listen to Steven Curtis Chapman's new album, entitled Beauty Will Rise. As I'm sure you're aware, Chapman and his family have been through a rough year or two, having suffered the tragic loss of his daughter, Maria. This album is birthed from that experience, and is a collection of psalms penned by a man who has literally walked through the darkest valley. I would be very interested in hearing your perspective on his reflections...
Let me know what you think.
Have you ever heard the song "God of This City"? Bluetree is the band that originally wrote it and there is an incredible story behind it. givmusic.com has a widget with a video of the singer telling the story and you can get a free download. I recommend checking it out, it's a really powerful story.
